HISTORY OF CAMPS BAY

The first inhabitants of area were the indigenous San and Khoi people, who lived on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles which were covered in forests and home to a wide variety of fauna.

When the Dutch arrived in 1652 the area was granted to John Lodewyk Wernich and was passed onto his son when he died. The son, Johan Wernich married Anne Koekemoer. When he passed away in 1778, a German sailor Fredrick Ernst Von Kamptz married her for her money.

By this time the Khoi tribe had largely died out due to small pox, and those that were left lived in the Oudekraal area.

Camps Bay was the hunting ground for Lord Charles Somerset, the Governer of the Colony. Victoria Drive, the road between Sea Point and Camps Bay was built by Thomas Bain and named in honour of Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1888.
